Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is a unique fighting game unlike any other. Instead of beating opponents until they are KO’d, in Super Smash Bros. players have to increase the other fighter’s percentage and try to blast them off the screen. Anthony Frias, freshmen in Law & Justice said, “The roster in this game is amazing! Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3ds made my dreams come true because now I can make Mario, Sonic, Pac-man, and Mega Man battle at the same time! It’s so beautiful.” Super Smash Bros. for Wii U has a huge cast of characters, including veteran fighters like Mario, Link and Pikachu. There are many new fighters like Little Mac, Villager, Duck Hunt and more! There are also new exclusive 3rd party fighters such as Sonic the Fastest Thing Alive, Pac-man the Yellow Bane of Ghost, and Mega Man the Blue Bomber.
The main mode in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is Smash, which has been available in every installment of the franchise since the beginning. Esai Morales, a freshman in Health, Science, and Environment small school said, “ I have played each game in the Super Smash Bros. franchise, which include the original Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64, Melee for the GameCube, Brawl for Wii, and of course the 3DS and Wii U versions, and they are all awesome!”
After selecting Smash, players have the options to have a regular Smash, an 8-Player Smash, or Special Smash. Regular Smash sends players straight to the character select menu, up to four players can play. Players are given the option to use customized characters, play in teams, and have a timed, stock or coin battle and many more rules. 8-Player Smash is the same as Regular Smash, but now you can play with five or more players, however the more players there are, less stages are available.
Finally, there is Special Smash is the most customizable of all, players can change the game’s speed, gravity, the stamina matches, change the size of characters, and more. There are many controller options for this game, including the Wii U Gamepad, Wii remote, Nunchuck, Classic controller, Wii U Pro controller, GameCube controller and even the Nintendo 3DS, 3DSXL, or 2DS systems can be used.
The Super Smash Bros. franchise has had online multiplayer since Super Smash Bros. Brawl, its back and it’s greater than ever, Jessy Gayosso a freshmen in Justice & Law said, “ The online is amazing in this game, there is rarely lag and you can spectate, play with friends or anyone around the world.” Playing online usually never lags and players can play for Glory which is a battle with no items, on Final Destination, a completely flat stage with no stage hazards. Or players can play for Fun, in which the stage is chosen at random and items are on. There are also various challenges and collectables such as over 700 trophies, music and a few demos of games called Masterpieces. There is a mode called Trophy Rush, this is the easiest way to help collect all the trophies. Frias said, “All these modes are amazing because they help you unlock trophies that look gorgeous and very detailed, and I like reading the trivia for each of the trophies.” Players can also freely make their own stages in Stage Builder by using the stylus from the Wii U Gamepad. Players can also customize the characters, make Mii Fighters, connect Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, and use Amiibo. Amiibo are collectable figurines that players can buy separately for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. There are currently 12 amiibos, but there will soon be one for every fighter in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/ Wii U, they can be trained up to level 50 while normal CPUs can only go up to level 9. Amiibo are also compatible with other games such as, Hyrule Warriors, Mario Kart 8 and more to come! Each Amiibo cost $12.99 and are not necessary to play these games.
There are also many modes including the Wii U exclusive Smash Tour, which is a board game that cannot be described in words, due to all the chaos happening at the same time. Morales said, “ Smash Tour is really hard to explain, it is a board game, but everything else is random! You can’t see anything coming at all! It is a really good mode to play with friends and family.” Classic is a mode in which players go through a series of battles, so that you can confront Master Hand and Crazy Hand and the all new Master Core, a swarm made of dark energy that has many different forms. There is also All-Star mode, in which players fight all the characters in the game, from newest to oldest. Gayosso said, “This game is really challenging, the challenges in this game are extremely hard compared to the previous games, but I felt really satisfied after finally beating a challenge that I have been stuck on for a while because I am rewarded with a new character or trophies.” There are many more modes that can also be played in co-op.
